1708 studio launch party!

Sunday, May 3, 2009

I'm finally gonna break the blog silence! I feel like I should have the voice from LOST that says... "previously on Josh's blog" since you've probably all forgotten about me. Just to catch you up on why I've been so busy lately...

After a bunch of meetings and waiting on permits and other annoying things, the new studio is finally up and running. I've been working from there for a week or so now and it's a blast! For those of you just tuning in, I'm sharing a studio space called 1708 with a couple good friends of mine, Cafe Evoke and Gibson Events. We all use 1708 as a place to work and meet clients. It's also functioning as an art gallery and sweet spot for private parties and live music! It's located (believe it or not) at 1708 NW 16th in the Plaza District of OKC. Aaaannd, if you're not doing anything this weekend, on Friday night, you should come by! We are having a huge launch party with all kinds of good stuff. It'll be a fun time!

FYI, the second Friday of every month the Plaza Ditrict hosts LIVE on the Plaza. All the shops, galleries and restaurants have their doors open with live music, art showings and other awesome stuff. So, if you come by to help us open 1708 you can also take in LIVE on the Plaza, doubly whammy!

If you live in the 405, come by Friday the 8th from 6-10pm. If you have time, please RSVP to comingto1708@gmail.com Hope to see ya there!

coming soon....

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

This is going to be a big month! We are in the final steps of opening the new studio. In the spirit of newness I decided it was time to give the old blog and website a facelift. I'm getting close to having it finished up and boy is it sweet! There will be all kinds of new technology worked in here, bigger images and much more! I've been working with an amazing web design company call INTO THE DARKROOM. It's the same company that built our slideshow site ,they are quite awesome and I can't wait to debut much more of thier handiwork throughout the year!

My studio mates, Cafe Evoke and Gibson Events, and I are throwing a studio launch party at 1708 on May 8th during the art walk in the Plaza District. It's shaping up to be a pretty sweet night, you're all invited by the way!
I'm hoping to reveal all this newness the same day as the studio launch!
Here's a peek...

the iPhone post (long and personal)

Saturday, April 4, 2009

One of my heroes is a commercial photographer from Seattle named Chase Jarvis. He is an absolute genius and on the forefront of every type of media and trend in the photography industry yet still manages to be distinctly individual. If you are a nerd, photographer, business owner, artist or avid reader you should RSS his blog! Awhile back he wrote that the camera he uses most, out of all the state of the art equipment he has, is the 2 megapixel iPhone camera. Why? Because it's the only camera that is always around. He is pretty good with it too!
Becoming a full time photographer changed the way I look at my cameras profoundly. It's the weirdest thing. There was a time when I was never without a camera. I'd take one everywhere. Now that I lug equipment everywhere and shoot for a living 3 or 4 times a week, my cameras sit on the shelf during my free time. I feel bad but they're heavy, expensive, and I just don't want to lug em around all the time. Not to mention, I had carpal tunnel at the end of last year after shooting the D3 all summer with no strap. (I hate camera straps!)
With that said, Chase re-inspired me! You don't need a D3 and a bag of lenses to document the little moment of life that you want to remember. All you need is to see life as if you always have a camera in your hands, and you do! Since then I've been reading up on how to be creative with the iPhone camera, tricking it to a manual exposure and such. There are even some amazing apps that allow you to edit your photos right on the phone! No wonder they call it the Jesus Phone!

Anyway, this post has been brewing for quite awhile and since I'm releasing a new blog and website the day we open the studio I thought this would be a good post for the meantime. So, enjoy a few glimpses of my life over the past couple years as seen through my iPhone and don't think you have to have expensive stuff to photograph life as it happens!

updates...

Monday, March 23, 2009

Hey all,
I just wanted to catch you up on whats happening around here with the McCullocks. Gavin is growing like crazy, I think he adds a chin or two each week. From certain angles he can manage to produce up to 4 consecutive chins, pretty impressive. He's started smiling and reaching for toys from time to time. I almost got him to laugh at me this morning, that will be a happy day! Katie is going back to her teaching job in a couple weeks and then I'll be flying solo with Gavin, you can call me Mr. Mom.

On the business front, we are making some big changes in the next few weeks. The studio should be finished this week and we hope to throw a grand opening party in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for details about that!

I'll be releasing a new blog and website really soon as well. The new sites will be filled with all types of nerd wonder. Video, social network integration, awesome animation and of course some sweet new images. You may notice a slow down in my blogging until the new blog drops, I can't wait!

Yesterday we got the chance to have coffee with some of our favorite clients from last season. Gene and Katie were passing though town on spring break and had a sweet gift for Gavin. I promised to not be the parent that gets all fanatical about kid stuff and talks in silly voices all the time. With that said, I can't help but think these shoe/socks are awesome. They're like shoes, but they're socks! Thanks so much to Gene and Katie, we're so lucky to have our lives filled with awesome people like you guys!

Amy's bridal session...

Monday, March 16, 2009

Wow, I can tell it's officially wedding season. My iCal is full of shoots, meetings, weddings and design consultations. But I wouldn't have it any other way. On Saturday I was having coffee with Josie and Kevin, some of our clients for this season and we got on the subject of efficiency. I was happy to report to them that this season is already shaping up to be more efficient for us. We've added some really cool technology to our workflow to make better use of time and creativity. Last year our average turn around time for wedding proofs was 5 weeks. This year, we are 4 weddings in and we've turned them all around in under 2 weeks! I can't tell you how happy I am about that. Case in point, Chris and Amy got married 2 weeks ago and I'm putting the final touches on their wedding this week. In the meantime I thought I'd share a couple shots from her bridal fashion session. Here's to efficiency!
